If your carpets are overdue for some deep cleaning, look no further than this easy-to-assemble cleaner that will leave your floors spotless.

Store-bought rug cleaning products don’t always do the trick on stubborn stains, like wine, food, mud, or pet stains. Plus, they can be very expensive, especially if you try multiple products and they don’t successfully clean your carpets.

With just a few ingredients (many of which you probably have on hand), you’ll have the perfect solution to remove even the toughest stains. Plus, this carpet cleaner is much less expensive than a solution you’d buy in a store and smells amazingly clean and fresh.

To make this carpet cleaning solution, you’ll need: a one gallon plastic or glass container with a lid, 1 cup hydrogen peroxide, 1/8 cup dish liquid, 1 tablespoon Oxiclean, ½ cup fabric softener, and a funnel.

There are no surprises when mixing together this carpet cleaning solution – it’s foolproof! Simply add all of the ingredients (except the water) to your container, using a funnel. Once you’ve added everything, then fill the remainder of the container with warm water. The solution is finished, that easily!

Note that you can easily rent a carpet cleaner if you don’t own one. Check with a local grocery or home improvement store to see if they have cleaners available. These rentals are very reasonably priced and can do an amazing cleaning job.
Also, as with any cleaning product, it’s best to do a spot test to ensure that you don’t damage your carpet. Take a small amount of hydrogen peroxide and dab it on an area of carpet that’s not typically visible (in a corner, under a piece of furniture, etc.), then wait 30 minutes. If you note any changes in the carpet color, you will need to skip this cleaning solution.

Once you’ve done a spot test and there are no issues, simply add 2 ounces of the cleaning mixture and warm water to the rug cleaner’s reservoir. Following the carpet cleaner’s instructions, proceed with the task at hand. You can save any leftover cleaning solution for future jobs. Simply store it with the cap on the container.
According to the MarthaStewart.com website, home cleaning products for carpets are an ideal solution, as the site explains: “Some commercial spot removers take off the protective coatings or break down dyes that are found on most carpets.”

The site also includes a list of stains and the best products to clean them, with mention of hydrogen peroxide’s excellent ability to bleach stains “without breaking down carpet dyes.” She recommends using peroxide on stubborn stains such as “blood, berries, candy, chocolate, soft drinks/coffee, gravy, ice cream.”

The cleaning instructions advise: “Mix: Buy 3 percent solution at a drugstore and use full strength.
Technique: Scoop up solids with a spoon. Blot liquids. Rinse repeatedly. If stain persists, use soapy water, then rinse. Repeat. If improvement stops, dab on hydrogen peroxide. Wait one hour. Repeat as needed.”

The site also recommends hydrogen peroxide on mud stains, with the recommendation to allow the mud to dry and vacuum before rinsing with soapy water and using hydrogen peroxide to bleach the stain.
