School Alerts Mom That Her Son’s Braids Violate Dress Code So She Pulls Him Out To Prove A Point

Brittany Anderson is furious that her son’s education has been interrupted because of something as inconsequential as braids.

The mother felt forced to pull her 12-year-old son, Nasir, from Teleos Preparatory Academy and transfer him to another after she received a call from administrators saying that her son’s hairstyle was breaking the dress code, according to KNXV.

“If the hair is maintained, what’s the problem?” Anderson asked. “It’s not like it’s keeping him from learning.”

The school’s dress code apparently states that boys are not allowed to wear braids. According to the news station, the rule reads, “No shaved heads, Mohawks, rat’s tails, pony tails, or braids.”

However, the mom admits that she didn’t see the rule in the handbook. She still insists there is a bigger issue, telling KNXV that her son had braids in his hair for several months without issue, and that the braids only became a problem in the new year.

“If [the school] would have pointed that out to me earlier in the year, then I would have nipped it in the bud and not let him grow his hair out,” she said. “But because you’re just telling me this is the new year, the school year is almost over and you want me to cut his hair? I’m not going to do it.”

Now, she wants to send a clear message that she’s challenging this handbook and the school’s dress code.

“You’re not going to dictate how my son can wear his hair,” she said.
