Plastic is one of the most used materials in the world. Every year, approximately 300 million metric tons of plastic is produced around the world. But the problem is that, in addition to the huge amount, plastic takes longer than 100 years to degrade. With this in mind, it’s normal for us to want to recycle and reuse these products as much as we can, especially water bottles. But it isn’t always the best idea.
Despite the recommendations to reduce, reuse and recycle the product, it’s not good for the health to refill the same water bottle time and time again. These are the two main reasons:
1. Hygiene
Bottles can partially crack or split, given that they’re designed to be used just once. Microorganisms from our mouth and hands can become lodged in these splits. This notably increases the risk of contracting illnesses.
2. Contamination from chemical substances
These same cracks can release harmful substances. Certain plastics can release biphenyls and other substances. It’s important to notice the triangular symbol and the number inside, which indicates what kind of plastic the product is made from. Those bottles with the number 1 are made of PET plastic which is safe to be used once only. Repeated use, stretching and heating can cause it to release harmful substances.
Recommendations
Knowing this, what can we do?
- first, inform yourself about the type of plastic used in your favorite water by looking at the number on the bottle. Also, if the bottle is safe, it’s important to avoid buildup of bacteria by washing it with detergent, just like any other kitchen container;
- preferably use glass bottles whenever you can;
- plastic bottles should never be heated under any circumstances.
