It pays to show kindness and selflessness every opportunity you get. Chances are, you might not get the ‘thank you’ you deserve at the time but remember, what goes around comes around.
A nurse found out how wonderful it can be to receive appreciation and love 38 years after an act of kindness was made.
Many years ago, a baby named Amanda Scarpinati was taken to the hospital after suffering severe burns. A young nurse took very good care of her during her recovery. The nurse not only helped her heal but provide such love and comfort to a baby that truly needed it.
Photos of the nurse holding the baby were published in the hospital’s annual report from 1977 and Amanda had kept those pictures all her life. She wanted to show her gratitude to this nurse. The pictures were also a strong symbol of hope and support for her for years.
Describing how much these snapshots meant to her, Amanda said, “I took comfort looking at the pictures of a beautiful woman — a nurse who took care of me. Looking at them, I felt her love and compassion.”
Amanda kept trying to find the nurse whose name was not published in the report. After many failed attempts, she decided to take things to social media. She shared the pictures on Facebook asking if anyone recognised the beautiful nurse.
It only took one day for her to find answers. The nurse was Susan Berger.
Even more amazingly, Susan remembered the little baby she held in her arms years ago.
“She was very peaceful. Usually, when babies come out of surgery they’re sleeping or crying. She was just so calm and trusting. It was amazing.”
Amanda and Susan met two weeks later, at the same hospital where their story began.
