Whenever you go to a karaoke bar, you will definitely hear ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond. Released over 40 years ago, this song crept into people’s minds and stayed there.
It is always very curious to know how such legendary tunes are born, to learn the story behind.
They say “genius is found in simplicity,” and that is absolutely true, even for the household names like Neil Diamond. A single photograph inspired the famous single.
It was a photograph of in a magazine Diamond was flipping through back in the days. “It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” the artist said. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there.”
The lovely photo never left Diamond’s mind, so one day he just wrote the song.
The artist kept this story in secret for decades! “I’ve never discussed it with anybody before — intentionally. I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday,” he said.
Only 40 years later, at Caroline Kennedy’s 50th birthday celebration he revealed the truth.
“I’m happy to have gotten it off my chest and to have expressed it to Caroline. I thought she might be embarrassed, but she seemed to be struck by it and really, really happy.”
