We’ve heard about various unexpected discoveries in the past, such as a new homeowner discovering a secret cellar when she took out carpeting.

Well, this one that was discovered in Scotland is much bigger than that.

When a terribl storm hit the Orkney Islands, Scotland, something incredible was revealed..

As you can see, villagers found a historic settlement that was hidden under the sand. Only when the wind swept over the Islands was this place found.

People were both shocked and curious to find these stone houses. When the news spread, famed historians came to check it out as well. According to them, this settlement was probably built roughly around 3100 and 2500 B.C., and that about 50 to 100 people lived in it.

Now named as the Skara Brae, this special village is the oldest settlement found in the United Kingdom.

As you can see, because it was surrounded by sand, the buildings were well protected for thousands of years, which excited archaeologists. They could study the settlement to learn more about what happened in the past!

When you take a closer look at the settlement, you’ll find that these houses were connected to each other by tunnels, and that each place had their own toilet.

But the surprise doesn’t end there – for some odd reason, one bed was always bigger than the other in each room. Archaeologists are still trying to find out why.
In addition, a carved stone ball was found, but no one can really figure out why and how this was made.

But perhaps the biggest mystery is this: Why the village was abandoned, and what happened to the villagers?

Although we have not quite found answers to these questions, hopefully we will in the near future.
