George and Amal Clooney have announced the birth of their twins.
The happy couple have released a statement announcing that Amal has given birth to a baby girl and a baby boy, who the new parents have named Ella and Alexander Clooney.
The couple’s representative spoke to People magazine saying, ‘This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine. George is sedated and should recover in a few days.’
Confirmation of Amal’s pregnancy was a long time in the making, with rumours circulating as early as September last year suggesting the pair were planning to start a family.
In January, speculation increased after Amal stepped out with what appeared to be a baby bump under a loose fitting floral dress, but the pregnancy wasn’t confirmed until February, when talk show host Julie Chen made the reveal live on air.
‘Beyoncé is not the only superstar expecting twins,’ she said during an episode of The Talk at the time. ‘Congratulations are in order for George and Amal Clooney!’, adding that although she didn’t have many additional details, ‘what we did find out is that the twins are due this June.’
Only the very next day, George’s mum reportedly let slip the genders of the twins, saying: ‘It will be one of each! Yes, a boy and a girl. That’s what I’ve been told.’
Before her marriage to Hollywood’s favourite bachelor in September 2014, Amal was already an established human rights lawyer and prominent activist. Throughout her pregnancy, she has continued with her work, notably stepping out at 6 months pregnant to deliver a powerful speech at the UN.
Actor George, meanwhile, has spoken out about his preparations for impending fatherhood, declaring to Extra: ‘I know swaddling! I know what I’m in for.’
Speaking to the Economic Times at a premiere back in March, he admitted that Amal had vetoed the standard outlandish baby names popular among celebs, joking that ‘My wife says I can’t name them Casa and Amigos,’ the tequila brand that he co-owns with good pal Rande Gerber.
