Lauren Warren is a news anchor for WRDW in Augusta, Georgia. She announced to viewers that she was pregnant, and while most people were positive, she couldn’t believe a voicemail that was left for her.
“Buy some decent maternity clothes so you don’t walk around looking like you got a watermelon strapped under your too-tight outfits. You’re getting to where you’re being disgusting on the TV,” the caller said.
Lauren couldn’t believe that a viewer felt so strongly about her appearance that they took the time to call in and insult her.
“It was that one word that really stabbed a knife right through my heart,” Lauren told Inside Edition. “Disgusting? That was a harsh thing to hear.”
On her blog, Lauren documented the incident. She revealed that while she would love to be in yoga pants or flowing maternity gear, being a news anchor isn’t the kind of job where you can wear those things. She has to look a certain away on camera — even if she feels self-conscious about it — and she has always accepted that fact.
However, Lauren learned a lesson from the incident. She realized that if adults are bullies, how can she expect her future son not to be?
“So, I think instead of letting this lady get me down, I’m just going to turn her negative energy into positive energy,” she wrote. “I’m going to say as many nice things as I can to as many people as I can, and I’m going to do it in a dress that fits these beautiful new curves with my ‘watermelon’ stomach showing.”
