Locals walking through a forest in Ecuador were surprised to see a baby jaguar who seemed to have collapsed.
It turned out that the 11-month-old cub was actually paralysed so she found it almost impossible to move.
Evidently, D’Yaria, as she was later named, was shot multiple times and it was very clear that if she was not rescued on time, she would not have survived. Thankfully, the locals who found her immediately took her to get some much-needed treatment.
The carried her into their truck and drove her straight to the vet.
A team of vets worked together to not only make sure D’Yaria lived but that she could gain as much of her mobility back as possible.
The veterinary team succeeded in finding and removing 18 shotgun pellet from the jaguar’s body.
In an interview with TheDodo, one of the doctors, Dr Cris Cely, said they suspected that D’Yaria was shot by cattle farmers and it was likely that they killed the cub’s mother.
“This is an area where people have cattle, and Jaguars are known for going into farms and killing cattle, so what the locals do is just kill the Jaguars to preserve the cattle. It’s very sad.”
Fortunately, D’Yaria is recovering quite well, thanks to the effort of the doctors and the kind locals.
