Nevertheless, a new solar power plant in Datong, China, decided to have a little fun with its design. China Merchants New Energy Group, one of China’s biggest clean energy operators, designed a 248-acre solar farm in the shape of a huge panda.

According to PV magazine, the first phase, which includes one fifty-megawatt plant, was completed on June 30.

The project just started to deliver power to a grid in northwestern China, while a second panda is planned for later in 2017.

The Panda Power Plant, as it’s called, will be able to produce 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of solar energy in twenty-five years. (source)

That will eliminate million tons of coal that would’ve been used to produce electricity, lowering carbon emissions by 2.74 million tons.

China Merchants New Energy Group has cooperated with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) so that the Panda Power Plant becomes a reality.

As the UNDP wrote in a statement, the project is part of a bigger effort to raise awareness amongst young people in China regarding clean energy.

The groups hope to design more panda-shaped solar plants throughout China in following next five years.
