Did you know that a burglary takes place every eighteen seconds in the United States? That’s almost 4,800 home burglary cases everyday. And, contrary to popular belief, the majority of home burglary cases happens during broad daylight – usually from 10am to 3pm.
What these statistics should tell you that burglary is more common than you think, and that this is a crime that you need to be aware of.
Besides, even if you think you’re completely prepared for such situations, it’s easy to panic and not know what to do when something horrifying actually happens.
14-year-old Savannah Jones’ mother, who lives in Montclair, California, recently had a chilling experience when she left her daughter to babysit at home.
It all happened one day in the afternoon, when Savannah’s mom asked her daughter to stay at home and watch her four-year-old niece Zoyee so that she can go run some errands.
Few hours later, while Savannah was playing with her toddler niece, she heard a knock at the front door.
Savannah said that when she heard the knock, she became immediately suspicious because they weren’t expecting any guests. So, instead of answering the door, Savannah first looked out the front door peephole. There was an unknown bald man standing on her porch.
Not only was he knocking on the door louder, but she also noticed that the door handle jiggling – this man was trying to get in.
Instantly, Savannah knew something was wrong and sprung into action.
First, Savannah thought of her niece, Zoyee. Savannah knew that she had to hide her niece somewhere safe first, so she hid Zoyee in the bathroom and called her mother. While Savannah was on the phone, she heard a loud banging noise.
Then, she heard the front door being kicked in, so Savannah immediately went into the bathroom to hide with her niece.
“I was very scared not so much for myself, but just Zoyee,” said Savannah to KTLA.
“I could hear him going through my mom’s room. He came by the door where we were hiding. I was just hoping he wouldn’t know that we were in here,” added Savannah.
Savannah was afraid that the man would hear her if she called 911, so she texted her mother instead.
“He is inside mom he’s gonna hear me,” wrote Savannah. “U call or come home or something mom.”
As you can probably tell from the texts, Savannah was afraid to death. However, she remained brave. Telling Zoyee to keep quiet, Savannah waited for help.
Maria Muratalla, Savannah’s mom, could not believe her eyes when she first read the texts from her daughter. Her daughter was in danger.
Not knowing what to do, she called her neighbor for help, who called 911 and rushed over to the house. Police said that the suspect had ransacked the house and two rooms.
Luckily for the two girls, he left without being able to find the girls hiding in the bathroom.
Savannah said that she can only imagine what would have happened to her and Zoyee if the man had found them hiding in the bathroom.
Savannah’s quick-thinking not only saved her life, but also her four-year-old niece’s life!
What a hero! I honestly can’t believe a young teenager didn’t panic. I would have frozen the second I heard the banging sound on the door.
According to KTLA, even though the police and a K-9 officer searched the area shortly after the 911 call was received, the man was not found. Savannah described the man was someone either in his 20s or in his 30s, was bald, and had a dark jacket on him.
