Betty Walter, a dog lover, was prepared even before the hurricane unleashed its worst. In anticipation of the storm, the 44-year-old rounded up her own dogs, foster dogs, and the dogs of her friends and neighbors into her care.
The group hid away in her attic to avoid the flood waters, and Walter even made a makeshift staircase to help the dogs get into the attic.
Walter posted on social media pleading for help not to be forgotten, and about 14 hours later, help did arrive.
Buck Beasley, Jeremy Williams, and Anthony Hernandez went out to canvas the neighborhood in a boat, and after picking up a man with his Doberman, they rescued Walter and all the 21 dogs.
The animals were put on the boat and the humans walked alongside the boat until they got to an area that was not flooded in knee-deep water.
Walter continues to update people on Facebook, and has now set up a PayPal to aid the cleanup and renovations in her home, accessible on her Facebook!
