In 2005, Rachelle and Jayson decided they were ready to try for their third child. After four months of difficulty, however, they decided to seek the help of a fertility specialist and begin hormone treatments. It worked!
Once Rachelle got pregnant, she was excited about the potential of having twins. But during her ultrasound, doctors noticed a third heartbeat. And just moments later, the doctor announced there were not two, not three, but five babies!
“The word ‘shocked’ only begins to describe what I felt at that moment,” Rachelle wrote on her blog. “I felt almost numb as the doctor tried to explain how this could have happened. The doctor immediately began explaining the risks of trying to carry five babies and strongly recommended that we selectively abort three of the fetuses, to give the remaining two a better chance.”
The outlook for quadruplets is oftentimes bleak, and even bleaker for quintuplets. Rachelle and Jayson spent the next three weeks consulting medical professionals, all of who strongly recommended reducing the number of fetuses. “I knew that these five babies did not come to me by accident,” Rachelle wrote. “I knew that God had sent them to me for a reason and that he wants me to do all I can to bring them into this world.”
Ultimately, Rachelle and Jayson decided to carry all five babies as long as possible.
In the following video, Rachelle shows off her gigantic belly at 33 weeks pregnant. Jayson films his glowing wife, calling her “bigger than she’s ever been.” Just five days later, on July 31, 2007, Rachelle delivered three girls and two boys. Kassidy, Kaydence, Rustin, Kyndall, and Ryder are five bona fide miracles.
