If you find a rubber band wrapped around your door handle at your home, call the police.

This warning comes from a woman who experienced this incident first hand. Thankfully, she shared her story on Facebook so that others would be aware of this very real danger.

“Warning!!! Two weeks ago during the day, a hard knock was at my front door, not a regular knock but almost pounding, (I honestly thought something may have happened to someone and they needed help) but something didn’t feel right…and I DO NOT answer the door when I am here by myself. So don’t bother! After several Knocks, they finally left. I glanced and could see it was a man through the stained glass of my door.”

She continued: “After about 30 minutes I walked outside to look for what I thought would be a brochure, but instead found a rubber band around my knob to hold the door to open when I unlocked the latch. I called Ron and he told me to get the gun out and leave it out. The Sheriff came by yesterday and said this is happening all of a sudden, as soon as you unlatch the door, they do not wait for you to turn the knob, they can bust in on you.”

Question of the week: If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would it be?

She further noted: “Anyway just be careful, I USE to be such a trusting person, but not at all anymore!…Do NOT ANSWER doors without knowing for sure you know who is on the other side! Those days are over!!!! Kids need to be made aware of this too!”

The site I Have the Truth further explained: “According to Cernigliaro, when the sheriff came by to investigate, he told her it was not an isolated incident; intruders will use rubber bands to hold down door handles so that they can immediately bust in when homeowners unlock the door. They are able to take unsuspecting people by surprise without even waiting for them to turn the handle.”

Among the comments left on the Facebook post, one person asked: “Thanks for the warning, but why would they leave the rubberband? Looks like from the post he had at least thirty minutes before the door was opened.”

Kim responded: “I am just telling you what the Police told me and Ron. That they will leave it and randomly come by and see if you left the door unlocked later?? ( I have no idea why they would think we wouldn’t notice) but you have to think about the type of person who is doing this. Or they were off to the side waiting and gave up or they could have been spooked off by a neighbor pulling up to their house or coming out in their yard or something…It has just been very strange. But I do know that if I would have opened the door, they had something on their mind, and it couldn’t be good. But who knows. That’s just what he said. But that was the first thing I asked, was why in the world did he leave it on there ??”

Another person responded with their opinion, based on their own experience, writing: “I work in the door hardware industry. If this band exerts enough pressure and you open the door, theoretically it could continue to press the thumb lever and keep you from locking the door back. So this CAN happen.”
