Dog is man’s best friend — John Unger of Bayfield, Wis. and shepherd mix Schoep are a proof of that.

The friendship between these two started when the man adopted Schoep from a shelter as a puppy19 years ago. They developed a special bond and became inseparable palls.
“He‘s been my guardian for the number of the years, ” Unger says about Schoep.

However, time has taken its toll. John‘s beloved dog developed arthritis, the issue causing his joints swell. Schoup is in so much pain that he has troubles getting to sleep. Unger‘s heart was tearing apart when he saw his friend suffering. He knew that people suffering from arthritis respond well to water therapy, so he came up with an idea.

He took his aging dog to one of their favorite spots: Lake Superior and carried him into the water. With no pressure on his body, Schoep quickly fell asleep in peace. This became a daily routine for the man and his pup, and sometimes they do it for hours. John values every minute – he doesn‘t know how much longer his best friend will be around.
