As humanity slowly continues to destroy this beautiful planet that we live on, we are regularly confronted with the awful realities that we have conspired to create for ourselves. There are a startling number of animals who have been affected by the decisions being made by thoughtless humans and the manatee is just one of the many animals that we are hurting with our carefree ways.
When humans continue to expand their territory and remove various animal habitats to make their own lives easier, this can cause a number of them to become extinct or endangered. Luckily, we are happy to report that the Florida manatee is in the process of making a very dramatic comeback. Conservation efforts have led to this positive development and manatee populations are experiencing an unexpected surge.
While this is a positive sign of things to come, we still need to be more cognizant of the damage that we are doing to these innocent creatures. If you have ever seen a manatee that is covered in cuts, this is because boat operators are not taking the time to pay the proper amount of attention to where they are going and the manatees are paying a terrible place as a result.
Did you know that over 100 manatees lost their lives because of thoughtless boating in the year 2016 alone? Manatees might be graceful animals, but they are also slow and this keeps them from being able to get out of the way in time. Since the manatee is also forced to come to the surface for air more often than other sea creatures, this makes them more susceptible to injuries as well.
Regulations have been put into place to ensure that boaters are encouraged to slow down, but this has not been enough by itself. It is believed that there are several manatee deaths that take place each year that are unrecorded. When mothers die, their babies often die, too. This is a sad and scary reality and we urge readers to share this story with their boating buddies as soon as possible.
If you are operating a boat in manatee waters, please be mindful of your surroundings. Would you like to do your part to help save our manatees from being cut up and killed by passing boats? Please take a moment to spread this story a little bit further by sharing it with all of your closest friends and loved ones.
