It’s been reported that a cashier working at McDonald’s has been charged with attempted murder. The woman, from Los Angeles, gave birth to a baby girl while she was at work and then tried flushing the newborn down a toilet according to prosecutors. The McDonald’s is located in Redwood City, California.

According to The Star, Sarah Lockner was working as a cashier at the McDonald’s restaurant on September 4th in the evening time. The San Mateo County District Attorney noted that the woman was complaining of stomach pain. Prosecutors noted that during her shift the 25-year-old woman visited the restaurant’s bathroom multiple times.

It was so often that her co-workers were worried. Eventually one co-worker went into the bathroom to check on Lockner and saw that there was blood on the floor. According to prosecutors, Lockner tried blaming the blood on a heavy menstral cycle. But of course her attempt in dismissing the situation didn’t work.

The fact that Lockner kept going into the bathroom called the attention of a second co-worker to go in and check on her. It was this second co-worker that noticed something completely unexpected and disturbing. According to The Star, the second employee walked into the bathroom, looked over her stall and “saw a newborn baby face down in toilet bowl,” prosecutors note. According to the district attorney’s office, Lockner had her hand on the baby’s back and the employee actually heard the toilet flush.
Prosecutors note that Lockner begged the employee to keep quiet and to not call the police. Once officers came to the scene, they found the newborn without a pulse and not breathing according to The Daily Journal. The baby since has been taken off life support and is expected to survive. Lockner told police that she had no clue she was pregnant and was surprised she gave birth according to San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

According to The Mercury News, Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti said “Her boyfriend said he did not know either, and none of her co-workers knew”. She continued, saying “We can all agree the facts of this case are pretty shocking. An infant, a newborn, is incredibly vulnerable. It’s shocking to the community a person would behave this way with a helpless newborn.”

One employee who works at that branch of McDonald’s where the incident took place described the entire event as being a “tragedy”. The employee, Mari Martinez, told The Independent: “She was new here and nobody is really talking about it”.

Lockner is accused of attempted murder and other charges, which include inflicting great bodily harm to a child. She faces life in prison if she is convicted. She appeared in court on Monday, according to The Independent, and didn’t enter a plea according to prosecutors. She’s due into court again on September 18th.

She is arranged at the San Mateo County court on September 18th where she is being held on $11 million bail. Doctors initially didn’t think that it would survive, but now that she’s being taken off life support she has been improving. According to NY Daily News, Child Protective Services are looking for any family members who could take the baby.
