Mom phones gay bar seeking advice after her son came out, and they didn’t disappoint

While it is easy to presume that your parents know exactly what they’re doing all the time, in actual fact, they’re pretty clueless. Their claims that they know best because they’re more experienced in life is nothing but a bluff. In reality, your parents are making it up as they go along.

Despite a great deal of pretending, your parents are all united on one thing: they wish the best for you. Their infinite love means that they will do whatever it takes to give you the very best in life, regardless of any other factors.

So when one mom, presumably from Mississippi, was told by her son that he was gay, she didn’t know how to react. But her love for her child ensured that she would do everything she could to make sense of the situation without hurting her son’s feelings.

Thinking out of the box, the unknown mom phoned a local gay bar to help understand how to handle the news. Her call to SIPPS in Mississipi was taken by Kara Coley, a bartender with 17 years worth of experience working in “gay bars on the coast.” But despite her knowledge in the area, Coley was left speechless when she answered the phone…

“So I got the most random phone call at the bar tonight,” Coley wrote on her Facebook wall, before proceeding to document the details of the call for her friends to see.

“Me: Good evening Thankyou for calling Sipps!
Lady on phone: Is this a gay bar?
Me: well we are a everybody bar but yes mostly gay.
Lady: can I ask you a?
Me: sure
Lady: Are you Gay?
Me: YES MA’AM
Lady: What was the one thing you wanted from your parents when you a came out?
Me: Umm
Lady: My son just came out to me and I don’t want to say anything that may mess him up in the head.
Me:well I think that you should just make sure he knows that you love and accept, wait do you accept it?
Lady: well Umm yes if that’s what he wants.
Me: You should definitely let him know that you love and accept him! I think everything will be ok from there!
Lady: okay well thank you.
Me:you are very welcome and good luck!”

Coley concluded the post by joyfully typing: “17 years of bartending in gay bars on the coast! That’s definitely a first for me!”

Unsurprisingly the post went viral. With over 400 shares and thousands of likes, it was clear to see that Coley’s friends, and a lot of strangers, fully supported the anonymous mom.

“That was an awesome thing you did. Taking her seriously and answering honestly,” wrote one approving user.

Meanwhile, another mother who’d found herself in a similar situation shared her own story: “Good For that mom!! I’m so happy to read this! My son came out at 14, he’s 23 now and I did the same thing!”

“Your response was amazing. It was obvious that this mother loved her son and wanted to ensure that she wasn’t causing harm to him when she reacted or replied to his coming out,” wrote another supportive user. “By displaying the love and compassion that you did, you may have saved a young person’s life… you may have saved a young person’s relationship with their parents… you may have saved years of depression and anxiety for both the mother and the son … you helped a confused mother come to terms with something she had on her mind.”

Whilst the concerned mother has remained anonymous, I hope that she has seen the impact her simple call has had. Hopefully, more mothers in the future will be able to handle the same situation in a similar way!

Sadly, not every mother can be as understanding. This shocking video shows the other side of coming out to your parents…
