Summer Clyburn and her boyfriend, Michael Garcia, were attending the Route 91 country music festival, which took a tragic turn when a gunman opened fire on the concertgoers.
Among those injured were Summer and Michael, though their story is a testament of how unthinkable tragedy can reveal the unwavering heroism of human beings.
The couple had just welcomed a baby girl three months earlier. There are few mothers who wouldn’t fiercely protect their loved ones, but what Summer did in these extreme circumstances has everyone calling her a hero.
Michael, a police officer, was struck in the head by one of the bullets. Summer immediately wrapped her body around her beloved beau to shield him. The mother was shot in the back protecting her loved one.
The act of courage may have been what saved Michael’s life. After a successful surgery, he is in critical but stable condition and is expected to make a recovery.
A GoFundMe was created for the couple and has already raised over $60,000 for their $75,000 goal.
“The love between those two are real, and they are new parents and new parents shouldn’t be going through this. I want to raise money to help with any medical bills and general bills and necessities so they don’t have to worry,” their friend wrote.
Although she was shot in the back, Summer was able to walk out of the hospital. A viral photo of her was taken as she held her dear baby with a bandaged gunshot wound.
