Elvis Presley was a shy 18-year-old student who didn’t stand out among his classmates. He wasn’t even recognized for having any particular talent.
Some reports of his student days say that even though he took a guitar to school, he was too scared to sing in front of his class. Instead, he practiced with a neighbor to build his confidence.
When Elvis left high school in 1953, his grade in music class was a “C”. Despite that, he became a worldwide musical legend.
The “Who’s Who” page of his high school yearbook lists 22 of his classmates who were destined for big things. Elvis didn’t even get a mention.
His extra-curricular activities included the Biology Club, English Club, Speech Club and History Club.
It is estimated that Elvis has sold more than a billion records around the world. But it’s surprising to learn that during high school he never said anything about wanting to be a musician. It wasn’t until two months before graduating that he signed up for a high school show where he performed under the name “Elvis Prestly”.
The yearbook which once belonged to Gloria Carmeen Trout, was signed by the singer in the following way: “To a very beautiful girl. Remember me. Elvis Presley.” Two years later, he became the number one heart-breaker in the country.
The yearbook is for sale for $19,000 on a memorabilia website.
It’s amazing to think that Elvis didn’t stand out among his classmates at all in high school, especially since it wasn’t long after that he became the world famous phenomenon that he was. Life is undoubtedly full of many twists and turns.
