he Poinsettias is a rather popular plant seen everywhere during the winter holidays. But beyond that, it has some symbolic significance behind its holiday appearance.
There is much more to the plant than most people are aware of.
Why This Flower Is A Symbol Of Christmas
It is generally related to Christmas, and the story behind it can be traced to Mexico and dates as far back as the 19th century.
It is said that a child who had little to bring to church on Christmas picked a weed from the roadside on Christmas Eve and placed it on the church altar.
By the next morning, the weed had metamorphosed into beautiful red and green flowers right before the congregation! Since then, the flowers have been linked with the Christmas celebration.
Roma’s Garden Decor
The beautiful appearance of the flowers has made them in high demand during the festive period. And the actress and producer Roma Downey seems to be a fan of the flowers too.
Just recently, Roma shared a picture of the decoration of her front door with a blanket of red poinsettias. The actress also said she “loves decorating for the holidays, creating a warm welcome.”
Why They Kiss Under The Mistletoe
The mistletoe is considered somewhat of a parasitic plant because it derives its livelihood by attaching to other trees. However, on Christmas, it is seen as a symbol of romance.
According to ancient mythology, back in the 18th century, stealing a kiss was a common practice among British servants. According to the tradition, it was considered bad luck to refuse a kiss under the tree.
So after the kiss, the couple would pluck one of its berries! It was also assumed that the moment all the berries were plucked from the plant, it no longer had any power to command kisses.
What are your decoration plans this holidays? Poinsettias and Mistletoe might just be the needed plants to give your home the Christmas flavor it requires!
