Although we all know it wasn’t God who personally wrote the reply to her letter, what the post officer in the town where Meredith and Abbey live did is possibly as close as somebody can get to acting like Him.
Meredith had been crying for days because she missed her 14 year old dog, Abbey, who had died last month. Her pain was so great that she decided to write a letter to God so He would recognize the animal when she arrived in heaven.
The girl literally wrote:
“Dear God,
Could you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her a lot. I’m happy you let me have her with me, even when she got sick.
I hope you play with her. She likes to play with balls and swim. I’m sending a photo of her so that when you see her, you’ll know she’s my dog. I miss her.
Love, Meredith.”
After writing the letter and putting it in an envelope, the girl put several stamps on the front and left it with her mother in the post office. Days later, when she asked if God had received the letter and her mom was running out of answers, a package in gold paper arrived, addressed to the girl. The packet contained a book, titled, “When a pet dies”, the letter written by Meredith and the following note:
“Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived here well. Having her photo was a big help, I recognized her right away. Abbey is no longer sick. Her spirit is here with me just as it is in your heart. She loved being your pet.
Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have pockets to put your photo, so I’m sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to always remember her.
Thank you for the beautiful letter. I send you my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I am wherever there is love.
Love, God”
