One day, Indiana farmer Jonathan Lawler had a revelation. One of his sons came home from school and told him that a classmate was hungry.
The thought was baffling. The area in which they lived was full of farm after farm. Yet there were students going to school hungry? Jonathan knew he had to do something about it.
The area was a food desert where mostly unhealthy foods were sold, but grocery stores with quality foods were too far without proper transportation. The local farmers were able to grow their own food and drive to get whatever they didn’t have.
That’s when Jonathan changed the way his farm operates. It went from a for-profit farm to a faith-based food aid organization. He sends his harvest to food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries.
He is now encouraging other farmers to donate portions of their harvest to help the hungry. Jonathan also helps to train veterans so they can start farms of their own.
“If everyone fed and helped their neighbors, most of the hunger problem would be solved,” John Whitaker of Midwest Food Bank said, praising Jonathan’s organization.
