In April 2015, a Michigan high school student named Mireya was preparing to attend her prom. She and her mom Connie worked together to heed the school’s dress code, making sure Mireya’s dress was appropriate before buying it.

Mireya couldn’t wait to show up to prom wearing her $300 blue and white floor-length polka dot gown. While her side was visible, her midriff was not exposed — which was in accordance with the rules. Her dress also passed the “fingertip test,” meaning it was long enough to wear.

But as Mireya walked into the dance with her boyfriend, school officials asked her to turn around. “You’re in violation,” they said. “You need to go home.”

Needless to say, the teen was humiliated.

Connie said photos show that several of Mireya’s peers wore similar dresses, though they were allowed to stay at prom, including some girls with sheer material over their midriffs.

Mireya and Connie decided to speak out about the controversy. Many parents found the school’s decision to throw Mireya out of prom completely unacceptable.
