Teen Wears Simple Black Top To School, But Vice Principal Calls Her Look ‘Inappropriate’

bez-imeni-1

At my high school, we had a fairly relaxed dress code.

Since I attended a large public school in a major city, it’s not too surprising that the rules related to our clothes were pretty lax (especially in comparison with some other schools around the country).

Unfortunately, not every school has such a progressive mindset when it comes to how students can dress — particularly when it comes to their female students.

It seems like every other day I’m reading a story about girls being criticized for so-called “inappropriate outfits.” Apparently, even showing “too much shoulder” is enough for a warning or even a dress-code violation write-up.

But one California high schooler named Remy Altuna wasn’t willing to stay silent. According to the teen, she was reprimanded by her school’s vice principal after going braless — even though the dress code said nothing about undergarments.

Remy took to Twitter to share her story.

Clearly, the teenager couldn’t contain her anger at having been called out about her outfit.

2
Along with her tweet, Remy shared photos of herself in the braless outfit in question.

A front shot shows the student in a black top with loose-fitting jeans.

According to Yahoo Style, Remy’s black top was actually a black bodysuit: a close-fitting, low-backed garment that would clearly show a bra strap if one were to wear a bra underneath it.

“BHS is so out of line. Now they want to dress code you for not wearing a bra. My underwear is none of there [sic] business,” Remy angrily tweeted, referring to the response she received at Beaumont High School in Southern California.

Remy also shared a longer note, further explaining her story. The text below has been copied directly from Remy’s Twitter account.

She writes:

Mrs. Weber told me to put my jacket on. I asked “why is what I’m wearing inappropriate” she said “it’s low it [sic] and are you wearing a bra?” I said “no, what does that have to do with anything” then she said “I don’t want people to see you and assume bad things about you. I’m trying to protect you”

Many commenters backed up the shamed teen and defended her right to wear what she wants without being sexualized.

Remy told Yahoo that she’d gone most of the school day in her outfit without anyone in the school administration saying anything to her.

It was when she went to the school office to get a signature that the assistant vice principal reprimanded her for her outfit and questioned whether she had a bra on.

Yahoo reported that the Beaumont High School dress code does not specify anything about bras or a lack thereof — though there is a section on tops needing to cover “all parts of undergarments” and mandating that they “shall not be low cut or revealing.”

6
Remy followed up her tweet with another, suggesting that the vice principal had reprimanded the wrong person in this situation: “If Mrs. Weber is concerned about people talking about my appearance she should focus on dealing with the students behaving inappropriately.”
7
One commenter supported Remy by pointing out that it is currently very hot in Southern California, and the girl can’t be faulted for dressing comfortably.

“If my vice principal was so concerned about bullying and people saying bad things about me […] then she should focus on the students who are behaving inappropriately,” Remy told Yahoo. “We as women shouldn’t be put down because of our bodies.”

Christina Pierce, Beaumont’s principal, issued the following statement to Yahoo:

In a school with 2,800 students, we acknowledge that enforcing the dress code is not a perfect process; administrators diligently work to ensure all students are following the dress code. Our goal is to establish a school culture that supports a productive academic atmosphere and safe environment. We provide ongoing training for administrators and staff, who educate students in identifying sexual harassment, and hold regular discussions with students about respectful behavior at school and in the classroom.

Do you think the vice principal was out of line?
