Emma, you’re up

Emma, Laura and Sarah – there could be a bundle of joy in your near future. While Jessica, Amy and Jade may have had their heyday on last year’s list of names most likely to get pregnant in 2017, the 2018 edition has been revealed and you could be on it.

According to Closer Online, the Emmas, Lauras, Sarahs, Stephanies and Kirstys of the world will probably have to invest in some pregnancy tests in 2018. It’s tough luck for last year’s contenders as Jessica and Jade’s names didn’t even make it into the top twenty, while Amy slid down to position 16.

While you might roll your eyes and say that they’ve just picked any old name out of a hat, the list’s actually a little more calculated than that. Closer Online looked at the average age a woman gets pregnant for the first time in the UK (28-29 years old in case you were wondering), then worked backwards to figure out when women that age in 2018 would have been born (1989-1990). From there, they went and researched what were the most popular baby names for girls in those years and ranked the top twenty below.

  1. Emma
  2. Laura
  3. Sarah
  4. Stephanie
  5. Kirsty
  6. Claire
  7. Nicola
  8. Jennifer
  9. Stacey
  10. Lauren
  11. Lisa
  12. Danielle
  13. Rachel
  14. Rebecca
  15. Natalie
  16. Amy
  17. Louise
  18. Samantha
  19. Ashley
  20. Gemma

I, for one, welcome the fact my name is not on the list – but I’m also incapable of keeping my house plants alive at 24 years old, let alone a baby. If you’ve spotted a friend’s name above, get ready to shell out on baby shower gifts and get as much social time in as you can now before the little one comes along.

Also it goes without saying, but don’t take the list too seriously if your name is or isn’t on it. As Jeff Goldblum says in Jurassic Park, nature – uh – finds a way.
