Dissolving a marriage is always a hard and harrowing thing. But when one spouse has been cheating, there’s even more anger and pain than usual.
Enter Jerald and Catherine. After 37 years of marriage, Jerald had decided to leave his wife Catherine for his young secretary. Jerald and Catherine were getting a divorce. And there were a lot of major assets to split up.
Jerald’s new girlfriend insisted that he be the one to keep the multi-million dollar home Jerald had shared with his wife Catherine, so that she could move in and live with him there. The lawyers got involved and made it happen. So Catherine had to move out.
What’s worse, Jerald only gave Catherine three days to evacuate the premises. He left her alone in the house for those three days to comply. After 37 years together, she was forced to pack all her belongings into boxes, crates, and suitcases in just one day. The next day, she had movers come to the house to collect her things.
On her final day in her beautiful dream home, she created a bittersweet departing meal for herself. She lit candles, put on some soothing music, and settled in for a delicious dinner: a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of white wine.
After she finished eating, she was struck by a genius plan. She went to every room in the house and stuffed half-eaten shrimp shells dipped in caviar into the hollow of each and every curtain rod. She cleaned up her dinner, bid the house farewell, and locked the door behind her.
Jerald and his new girlfriend returned to the home, now free of Catherine and her things. Within a week, the house began to smell just awful. They tried everything they could think of to eradicate the smell: cleaning, mopping, opening the windows. Expensive and extensive deodorizing treatments and exterminators were employed to fix the problem, but nothing helped. They even replaced the carpets, but the smell persisted.
A month went by before the new couple gave up and decided to sell their home. But, alas, anyone who set foot inside wouldn’t buy. The real estate agent even dropped the listing out of frustration and disgust.
Jerald, in a fit of desperation, called Catherine. He knew she had loved the home they once shared. He offered her the house a tenth of its true price. She offered to take the home back under one condition: they pack up all their things and leave immediately. She was generous and gave them a week to move all their belongings to their new home, including the curtain rods!
