Have you ever dreamed of living in a tiny town in Italy? Well, this might be just the deal for you.
According to CNN, Ollolai, a small town in the mountainous region of Barbagia, in Sardinia, is offering up abandoned homes for only €1 (approximately $1.25).
I know what you’re thinking: What’s the catch? Naturally, there is one, though it still doesn’t make the purchase prohibitive.
The 200 stone dwellings up for sale are in poor condition. Buyers who purchase these homes for €1 are required to commit to refurbishing their new property within the span of three years. Business Insider reports that refurbishments on property in this condition will cost around $25,000.
The village has reportedly already sold three houses, and over 100 people from around the world have expressed interest in potentially buying one of the remaining homes.
Within the past 50 years, Ollolai’s population decreased from 2,250 to 1,300, and the town has a very low birth rate. Its mayor, Efisio Arbau, explains that his goal is to prevent his community from becoming “a ghost town” — so he contacted former owners of the abandoned homes and asked them to sign the houses over to town authorities.
“We boast prehistoric origins. My crusade is to rescue our unique traditions from falling into oblivion,” Efisio told CNN. “Pride in our past is our strength. We’ve always been tough people and won’t allow our town to die.
“We need to bring our grandmas’ homes back from the grave.”
