Earlier this month, a 7-year old cat named Helen and two 10-week old sibling kittens named Bruce and Willis were rescued by the Faithful Friends Animal Society in Wilmington, Delaware due to serious eye problems. To give them the best chance at normal lives, the rescue center decided to have their eyes removed. However, after the surgeries, they had difficulty adapting to not seeing anything.
Fortunately though, Sherry Stewart – one of the volunteers at the shelter – resolved to help out. “Helen was so sweet but so distressed in her cat kennel,” she said. “I knew I could at least give her a temporary place to call home where she could recover and learn how to transition to life without sight.” She also decided to take in the two kittens who were adjusting badly.
So everything was all sorted out, but there was a problem: the Stewart family had two huge pit bulls.
But to her surprise, their dogs Alfie and Frankie had hearts that were as big as they are. When Sherry took home Bruce, Willis, and Helen, they instantly formed a connection with the pit bulls.
Sherry says that the dogs probably sensed that the cats desperately needed love and that is why the two took on the role of surrogate mothers. And who would’ve known they would be good at it despite the stigma that has been attached to pit bulls everywhere?
Now, the cats and the dogs are inseparable. In fact, they have become so close that even the kittens have gotten used to sleeping on the pit bulls’ backs!
