Anyone who knows someone who has returned from war after serving their country will know how hard it is for them to return to normal life and back into society.
Many experience alienation, depression and general anxiety. I think it’s important to remember to be good to those who have put their lives on the line to protect our freedom.
This particular story about an ex-army vet really hit me straight in the heart.
While in Afghanistan, Christopher Garrett, an ex-combat engineer, was on a mission one night mission when he was shot in the stomach. The incident later led to a medical retirement.
Christopher flew back home and tried to live a normal life, which included mowing his lawn at least once a week. He mowed using a push mower, the old-fashioned kind.
With a 100 percent disabled rating, simple tasks like mowing the lawn were now harder for Garrett than for most people.
Then one day, Garrett’s wife Brittany saw him crying outside their home. She thought something was wrong but soon discovered it was quite the contrary.
An anonymous neighbor had noticed Garrett mowing the lawn and how he’d been struggling with such an old device. Then, the anonymous stranger did the amazing: he went and bought Garrett and his family a brand-new John Deere riding lawn mower.
The stranger left a note with the gift that said: “I hope this saves time for the things that matter most in your life. Thank you for your service and for my freedom. Sincerely, A grateful American.”
You can only imagine the happiness Garrett and his family felt when receiving the gift and the note. In addition, the new mower meant Garrett had more time to spend with his wife and kids.
What a wonderful story! Whoever this stranger is, he or she most certainly has a heart of pure gold!
