Most people audition for America’s Got Talent just to showcase their talent. For Anna Clendening, the purpose of performing was to prove she was in control.

The 20-year-old had missed out on a lot of experiences due to crippling anxiety and depression. Although her conditions kept her away from certain things, music was the one stable thing she had.

“When I was 14, I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder,” she explains in the video below, posted in 2014. “I suffered from a lot of panic attacks. I, you know, couldn’t leave my house. Most days, I couldn’t leave my room. I couldn’t even get out of bed. It felt like my mind had given up on me.”

The young woman had recently experienced her deepest low since being diagnosed. Luckily, she had one thing to look forward to: her music.

In the video, she nervously walks on stage and introduces herself to the judges, eventually revealing her struggle with anxiety and depression to everyone. Before she can even start singing, she starts crying in front of the whole audience but manages to pull herself together.

As she begins singing, the judges and audience are immediately captivated b
y her strong voice. Toward the end of her amazing performance of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen, she begins to cry.

Once judge Howie Mandel sees her unable to cope with the sudden rush of emotions, he runs right on stage to be by her side.
