31-year-old Julia had a rather uncomfortable experience when she went to visit a hairstylist to get a haircut.
She had just undergone surgery and was looking forward to a little pampering. She had a health condition called psoriatic arthritis which often left her with itchy, dry patches on her skin.
Wanting to feel good again, Julie decided to get out of the house for the first time since the surgery.
She entered the hair salon and sat on the chair. When the hairstylist came around and took one look at her hair, Julia was surprised at her rude, judgemental tone when she said, “Are you contagious?!”
The stylist had noticed the dry patches and had an unpleasant reaction. Despite feeling offended, Julia took her time to explain what psoriasis was and that it cannot be passed from one person to another.
Despite her explanations, Julia was still refused service and asked to leave.
Needless to say, she was very shocked and upset. Julia found herself sobbing in her car. She said: “She made me feel self-conscious. She made me feel like I had done something wrong… that there was something wrong with me.”
After pursuing the matter, the salon management responded by saying staff members have the right to refuse service if they feel their health is at risk and that Julia should have brought some kind of medical documentation to her appointment.
