Kyle Smith and his dog Bodza have come a long way together. They were both members of the U.S. Air Force. Kyle with his dog spent 189 long days in Kyrgyzstan as a part of the security mission. But that was not the most heartbreaking situation that happened in their life.
Bodza worked as an explosive detection dog; he helped to save lives in Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, and Kuwait.
Kyle began to work with this dog in 2012, but they became friends very fast.
The man said: “I loved working with him because he taught me a lot — patience as a young handler, and how to understand that this job isn’t just about you.”
They were also happy to play together.
So when Bodza retired, Kyle adopted him immediately.
Bodza was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy in the summer of 2016. This illness is incurable. Nothing could help the poor dog. The dog’s life turned into something terrible. He couldn’t move his body freely anymore. Kyle made the hardest decision in his life to put Bodza down.
The soldier was with his dog until the very end. His co-workers came to support him.
My heart is broken. I am crying.
His dog was a real hero!
I will never forget how loyal he was,” the soldier said. “He was selfless — more than any human I’ve ever known. He’s done so much for next to nothing and did it with a smile. I miss him every day.”
