Art often imitates life, and sometimes life imitates art. In this case, art decided to take inspiration from the beautiful story of this couple, Katie and Dalton Prager. They had to deal throughout their short life with a disease called cystic fibrosis, and in the last week they both lost the battle to it. First Dalton said goodbye and five days later, Katie joined him.
Katie and Dalton became known as the real couple portrayed in the film “The Fault In Our Stars.” The movie tells the story of two youngsters who met each other because of their illnesses. They end up falling in love and have to deal with natural problems of adolescence along with their terminal illness.
In real life, the couple met at the age of 18 through Facebook. And despite the problems caused by their disease, they got married two years later. Cystic fibrosis is a condition that affects cells that produce mucus, sweat, and gastric juices.
In 2014, Dalton went through a lung transplant, and had to return to his hometown for his parents to take care of him. Right on the next year, Katie had to go through the same transplant, but she also had lymphoma and kidney failure. Therefore, since 2014, they both lived apart from each other with a few sporadic visits. All contact was maintained over the internet, and the last time they had seen each other had been in July of this year.
On September 17, Saturday, Dalton died at the age of 25. Katie, who was also hospitalized, had to say goodbye through the internet. She posted on her social media that “he was a brave fighter and giving up was not in his vocabulary.”
Just five days after Dalton’s death, Katie also said goodbye and went to find her husband; she died of post-transplant complications at the age of 26.
This is really an incredible story of love and it is just beautiful that it happened in the midst of so many difficulties! Share this touching story!
