We’ve come a long way as a human race. Some of the things that we did in the past were a little bit questionable especially in ancient times. Whether it be
- Drinking blood,
- Urine face masks,
- Drinking poison,
It’s safe to say that people used to do some pretty insane things back in the day. Here is a list of some of the wackiest beauty routines, beliefs, and traditions that used to happen in ancient Rome.
Some of these facts may surprise you because there are a lot of common assumptions about how people lived in ancient Rome. While some of them are true, there are others that aren’t exactly correct.
1. Gladiator Blood: Physicians in ancient Rome would suggest drinking the blood of a gladiator or consuming their liver in order to solve all sorts of problems. It was believed to cure epilepsy and infertility. The blood had to be fresh and it was usually costly. Some people would go to executions to use the blood of criminals.
2. Life Expectancy: Though some people already know the lifespan of a human living in those times was not very long (an average of 25 years of age), this doesn’t mean that nobody made it into late adulthood or old age. The number was swayed by the high amount of deaths during childbirth as well as infant mortality.
3. Hours in the day: In ancient Rome, the hours were altered depending on the season. The same way that we turn our clocks back and forwards for daylight savings, they would change the length of an hour in order to coincide with the sun.
4. The Color of Royalty: Nowadays, some people may associate the color purple with femininity similar to the way the color pink is treated. In ancient times purple was a color of status and was reserved only for people of high importance such as emperors or senators. Murex shells were used to make the purple dye. It was considered treason for anyone outside the elite to wear the color purple.
