Pensioner Winifred Peel, of Wirral in the United Kingdom, isn’t a 77-year-old that you should mess with. As three muggers learned after they attempted to rob her.
According to prosecutor William Beardmore, Peel was at an ATM when Piper Dumitru, Florin Geblescu, and Felix Stoica came up behind her:
«The complainant became aware of somebody standing to her right. He pushed against her, causing her to rock to one side, and she recognized him as a male she had seen exiting Barclays Bank earlier.»
«He said ‘it’s not working’. She then became aware of a second male she also recognized from having left Barclays Bank.»
«He leaned over her and pressed the button to withdraw £200, and at that point she realized she was being robbed. She took hold of the second male by the collar and banged his head against the cash machine three times to try and stop him.»
Grandma still got moves. The three, presumably terrified that a 77-year-old was actually fighting back, fled. But they were caught by police, who determined that a bloody Stoica was the one who received a beating.
The bad ass gran said in a statement:
«They did not care about how this would affect me. I would definitely say this has changed my life, I will never have the confidence I once did.»
Judge Norman Wright applauded her for making a stand:
«You targeted a vulnerable victim, a lady who was 77 years of age. Notwithstanding her age, she resisted, there was a struggle before you made good your escape.»
Dumitru was jailed for 8 months, Geblescu got 18, and Stoica was sentenced to two years. Their defense admitted they had made a «terrible mistake,» adding that the three were struggling financially.
