When Christoph and Shauna met and fell in love, Christoph already owned an old grain silo that he used as a backyard shed. But it was pretty clear from the beginning that Christoph, an architect by profession, wanted to do a lot more with it. After they were married, the couple decided to transform the silo into their first home.
The first step was to move the silo so that a proper foundation could be laid underneath it. Once it was placed back on the solid foundation, some windows were added and a second floor was built inside in order to maximize the interior space.
«We had to do a pretty serious pare down of our stuff to move in here,» explained Shauna. The silo may not look like much from the outside, but the inside is an impressive display of modern interior design.
The living and dining areas are located on the ground floor. All the furniture and the cupboards are customized to fit the unique shape. This allows for optimal use of space.
A very small and minimalist bathroom is hidden in a built-in cupboard. The bathroom door also serves as a storage shelf. Because the surface space of the silo is only about 180 square feet, every last inch has to be used perfectly.
The second floor is about 60% the size of the ground floor. This is where the bedroom is and, just like on the ground floor, all of the furniture is customized to fit into the round space.
Outside there is also a very special feature — an outdoor shower! A high wall around it makes sure that nosy neighbors can’t take a peek.
This video offers a virtual tour of this very unique home:
Christoph and Shauna love their crazy little home and enjoy the freedom that comes from not being surrounded by the clutter of material things. But most of all they appreciate how their unique house has brought them closer together — after all, you have to get along pretty well if there’s not enough space to get away from each other!
