“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

Adam was born September 19, 1928, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Otto West Anderson and Audrey V. Speer. He was born William West Anderson, but he chose to use his middle name as his stage name in the late 1950s.

Adam starred in the 1960s show Batman as the title character. The show ran on ABC from 1966 to 1968. Playing the Caped Crusader on the show made him a household name, and he’s been ranked by fans as one of the best to play Batman.

He also voiced a cartoon version of himself as the mayor of Quahog in the animated FOX series Family Guy. His career had faded after Batman ended, but he rose to popularity again once he began voicing the show’s mayor.
