Country music legend Glen Campbell has passed away at 81 years old.
TMZ reports that Glen died on Tuesday around 10 a.m. in Nashville after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
A country singer whose talent was also embraced by the pop charts, Glen had a fruitful career spanning over five decades. He sold more than 50 million albums with several hits, including “Galveston,” “Wichita Lineman,” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.”
Born in Billstown, Arkansas, on April 22, 1936, Glen fell into music at a young age. According to Biography.com, his father bought him his first guitar at age 4.
When his career started, he worked with many big acts in the music industry, most notably touring with the Beach Boys in late 1964 and early 1965.
Aside from making strides in country music, Glen also landed acting roles and hosted a TV show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, from 1969 to 1972.
In 2011, Glen’s career took a turn when he announced he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He prepared to say goodbye to the stage he loved dearly, undertaking a farewell tour and releasing his last song, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” The song spoke about what the disease would soon do to him while fondly mentioning his career and family.
Glen’s success in the music industry is apparent with his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and his Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
He’s survived by wife Kimberly Woolen and eight children.
