Gregg Allman, best known as one of the founding members of The Allman Brothers Band, is dead at 69 years old.
Gregg was known as a rock n’ blues pioneer along with his brother Duane. The brothers founded The Allman Brother’s Band in 1969, with Duane originally fronting. Just two years later, in 1971, Gregg became the band’s frontman after his brother Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Gregg wrote and sang such hits as “Melissa,” “Jessica,” “Whipping Post,” and “Midnight Rider.”
Gregg passed away peacefully at 69 in his home in Savannah, GA according to a statement posted on the singer’s official website. According to this publicist, Ken Weinstein, his cause of death was complications of liver cancer. He is survived by his wife, Shannon Allman, five children, three grandchildren, and a large extended family.
Gregg will forever be remembered for his voice and his music, which defined a generation. A news clip from earlier this year covered details regarding the singer’s plan to continue his solo tour in spite of health issues.
