Some of the best dinners and snacks out there are potato-based, from shepherd’s pie to mashed potatoes to French fries to potato chips.
But there’s one thing about cooking potatoes that’s always frustrating: peeling them.
Using a peeler on potatoes is time-consuming, annoying, and sometimes messy. If you use a knife to peel your potatoes instead, it can be dangerous, and you end up wasting a ton of potato in addition to the skin.
As someone who used to work in a kitchen and have to peel 50 pounds of potatoes at a time, I know how exhausting it can be. Now, I find myself constantly wishing I would have known about this brilliant hack.
This potato peeling hack is without a doubt the simplest way to peel potatoes — and all you need is a pot and some water!
First things first: Boil a pot of water. Once the water is boiling, place a potato into the water and let it boil for 15 minutes. Next, transfer the potato to ice water and let it sit for 3 minutes.
Then take the potato out of the ice water and slide your thumb across the skin’s surface — the skin will just peel right off! Using your fingers, peel off the rest of the potato skin.
