The scene didn’t look great when the Columbia Police Department were called out on an emergency at a nearby bridge. When Officer Michael Blackmore pulled up, he found a man with his legs dangling over the side of the bridge, on the edge of ending his life. The heartbreaking situation was caught on dashcam by the South Carolina city’s police dash camera.
Officer Blackmore began to talk to the man to get his mind off of whatever was causing him so much despair. The Columbia policeman tried question, after question to try to make a connection with the suicidal man. The man sobbed as he sat on the rail of the bridge, and the situation seemed hopeless until the officer found something in common — a love for football.
“You like watching football?” the officer asked. The man replied that he did and that his favorite team is the Washington Redskins.
A ray of hope was shown in the high-intensity situation that could go wrong at any moment. The conversation about football seemed to take the man’s mind off of his desperation.
The caring and quick thinking officer took the opportunity to continue to talk about football with him and their mutual hatred for the Dallas Cowboys.
The officer asked the man for his hand and told him to “come on back over” to safety. With the help of an EMS medic, the man was pulled over to firm ground.
“I just wanted to get his mind off of whatever was bothering him,” said the officer.
We are amazed at Officer Blackmore’s ability to bond with the man to save his life. He’s a true hero!
