Nasir Sobhani is now 26 years old, but his early 20’s were a time he’d rather forget. “I used to be a drug addict and I didn’t care about anybody else. Now that I’m sober, serving others is the best high I’ve ever felt. Sharing the voice of the unheard is my new drug.”

After cleaning up his life, Nasir took to the streets to give haircuts to homeless people in a project called, “Clean Cut, Clean Start.”

2
Nasir hits the streets of cities all over the world with his skateboard and barber’s kit, searching for homeless people who could use a helping hand.

It all started when Nasir was a barber’s apprentice in Melbourne, Australia. One day during a break, Nasir struck up a conversation with a recovering heroin addict who’d only been sober for one month.

After their conversation, the young man decided to celebrate his sobriety with a haircut. After the cut, the man’s mother came up to the barber shop and began tearing up after seeing her son’s new look.

In that moment, Nasir was hooked on helping people.

“It was at this point that I realized that if I could help encourage this change for a guy and all I’m doing is just what I love doing, then maybe I should keep doing it,” he told the Herald Sun.

6
“You already have a newfound confidence when you get a haircut, and now imagine what it’s like for someone who’s really been in a bad place in their life.”

7
“I remember the days of when I used to just hate myself and not even look in the mirror without crying because I would just be so disgusted at who I was,” the barber said in a documentary about Clean Cuts, Clean Start.

8
“And I find that embedded within a lot of my street clients. They feel so ashamed of who they are.”

11
“A human interaction with them, companionship from someone who just genuinely wants to know about them is going to really help them out,” he said. “So letting them know that they are worthy of human interaction is actually the main thing here.”

11
Nasir said it best. Homeless people are people, too. What better way to help them rise above their circumstances than by helping them feel valued and loved? Nasir has done an incredible job nurturing the goodness in their lives. Let’s hope the rest of us can find our own way to be kind.
