There is a huge controversy in our country right now over the National Anthem. Football players, as well as other athletes, are kneeling in protest when the patriotic song plays.
But for former Conway High School football player Wesley Baker, standing for the National Anthem is a privilege.
You see, three years ago, the South Carolina teen was walking on the side of the highway when he was hit by an 18-wheeler. As a result, he lost one of his legs and suffered brain damage, along with several other injuries.
Doctors weren’t sure if he would survive, but he’s proven he is a fighter, reaching many milestones since the accident.
On Friday night, as the National Anthem played before the Conway Tiger’s football game, Wesley – watching from the stands – did something that left the entire stadium in tears: he stood up.
I cant even begin to tell you all how I felt,A moms dreams to see her son stand, and oneday walk! A huge milestone!…

“It feels like a dream,” Wesley’s mom, Debra Phipps, said. “I’ve asked God for three years… when his accident took place I said, ‘God please let my son walk again and talk again,’ and day by day, he’s shown me miracles.”
Debra is thrilled for her son and the progress he has made, and she wants the rest of America to take note.
“Wesley, he’s worked hard, he’s lost his leg and he had a right to sit down, but now God is giving him the strength to stand up, and we all need to stand up for America,” she said.
This is what we all need to see right now. This is the America that makes me proud.
Next up for Wesley? He wants to walk across the field.
