Sage, a 12-year-old Labrador, is Beth Cole’s best friend. So when the blind dog, who had lost both her eyes to glaucoma and had recently suffered a tumor, went missing, Cole was devastated.
“It was horrible, we just didn’t know,” Cole said. “You know it was cold; she’s kind of helpless as far as being able to find her way back on her own.”
For eight days, the blind dog was lost. The family had mistakenly thought she had been brought back into the house after playing outside for an hour. They had no idea that Sage had gotten lost in the woods of the Santa Cruz Mountains in Boulder Creek, California.
The family hired a professional dog tracker to search, but to no avail.
Doubt was beginning to creep up on Cole.
And just when all seemed lost and the family was preparing for the worst, a hero emerged.
Dan Estrada, a veteran firefighter and paramedic for the Pleasanton Fire Department who also happened to be Cole’s neighbor, was on a walk with his friend along the woods when he made a startling discovery.
“I saw what I thought was a trash bag in the stream, and as I looked a little bit closer, I could tell it was Sage. And the very moment I saw Sage, my heart fell into my stomach and I was overwhelmed with sadness because I knew at that point that it would be a body recovery.”
Thankfully, it wasn’t. He was able to reach her lifeless body and found that, surprisingly, she was still alive. So, he set out to reunite her with her family.
