Keith Urban’s commute to work is a lot shorter these days thanks to a change in the way he now records his album. Instead of getting in the car and driving off to one of the studios on Nashville’s Music Row, he just walks to the studio he’s built at the home he shares with wife, Nicole Kidman, and their two daughters. That means he’s able to get more done with his music while also making it home to get in quality time with his girls.
Keith says, “I don’t have to leave the studio so soon to make it home for dinner. I mean, that’s actually a real thing. My wife will testify. If I say, ‘I’m going to be home at 5:45,’ I get home at 5:45. I don’t get home at 5:50. I get home at 5:45.”
Having the studio at his house sometimes allows Keith an extra hour or more to work on his music instead of wasting time in his car.
“It’s nice now, because the traffic is insane in Nashville,” Keith explains. “To make it home at 5:45, sometimes, I was like, I’m going to leave the studio at 4:30 to make it. It’s crazy. So, I love that I can record right up until 5:44.”
That extra time in the studio is paying off as Keith winds up work on his upcoming studio album, which he expects to release in the next few months. The lead single from that project, “Female,” is already climbing the charts. That song features Nicole on background vocals. Again, she was able to just walk into the home studio and sing her part. Score another one for Keith working from home!
Another special guest on Keith’s new album is pop superstar Ed Sheeran. Ed is a co-writer on one of the new songs, along with Grammy nominee Julia Michaels. Keith got the demo of the song last summer with Ed singing and playing guitar on it. After playing around with it for a few months, Keith finally nailed down his own take on the track.
He says, “I used the template of what they’d done with that version, and replaced the guitar parts all except the acoustic, which is Ed playing, because his playing was so great on the song. I just left it. There was no need to replace it. It sounded great.”
We’ll keep you posted when Keith announces plans to release his new collection of music. We expect a full tour to follow the album release, too..
