Genetics plays a powerful role in what traits parents pass down to their children, but as this chart shows, nothing is guaranteed.
So, if you have red hair and green eyes, and your partner does too, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your kid(s) will.
In fact, even though these charts are used to predict what offspring will look like, they also make clear that there’s an element of randomness that could make a child more diverse than you thought!
Did you know there are «strong» and «weak» genes that are more or less likely to be passed on?
Here’s the math on eye color, in case you were wondering.
Normally (but not always) strong genes will be more prominent than weak ones.
We see that occur here as well.
But often there’s no «one» gene that dictates a trait. In fact, there can be hundreds, so it’s not quite as simple as comparing one strong gene against a weak one.
As we see here, there’s a lot going on that complicates the passing of genetic info.
Some genes lie dormant, skip generations, or just don’t manifest themselves sometimes.
So nothing’s certain, but there are very clear odds associated with traits, and science can help you figure out the most likely ones that your kid would exhibit, helping you learn what they would look like ahead of time.
