A 14-year-old girl puts out an incredible message after her classmates relentlessly bullied her for weeks. Schoolchildren can be outright cruel when it comes to bullying, but it’s especially hard for this poor young girl who has been bullied for her name.
Isis, a sweet young girl has received constant torment and harassment from her fellow classmates because her name is similar to the terrorist group ISIS. The bullying has been extremely rough on her.
Isis explains just one of the many ways she’s been harassed for her name.
I have people come up to me and say why are you killing us Americans? I’m an American, too, how are you going to say that.
She has been facing bullying for the past 3 years and has even resorted to transferring to another school.
The new school has supportive teachers and a principal, but still the bullying continues.
I have the issue of every day when I walk into school, just wanting to stop right there in the middle of the hallway and just cry
Isis’ name comes from the Egyptian Goddess Isis. The name typically means “supreme goddess,” but in recent times many have confused it for the ISIS terrorist group. The terrorist group ISIS stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Due to the group’s prominence in mainstream news, the name Isis has become incredibly unpopular among parents naming their child. According to Babycenter.com the name had reached its all-time high of popularity in 1998 but has hit an all-time low in 2015, two years after ISIS was formed.
But for young girls like Isis who were named 14 years ago, the fix isn’t nearly so simple. Many students confuse her with the terrorist organization which a small amount of research would prove to be untrue. Still, the bullying and harassment continues with students who simply do not know any better.
However all is not so grim as Isis has an inspiring message for others named Isis. In an emotional video posted on Facebook, Isis shared her message of hope.
You kids out there with the name Isis, love your name. Cherish your name. I’m still learning, and I know you are, too, but in all reality, you’re named after a goddess and not a terrorist group.
Just a few days later after posting her emotional video, Isis posted another where she was much happier. She received endless support not only from others named Isis, but also those sharing their support in the comments and sharing her inspirational video.
What are your thoughts? Should she change her name or embrace it? How should schools handle this kind of bullying? Tell us down below!
