Millie Maltby spent hours crafting the perfect wedding cake of her dreams. She joked about the state the cake would be in by the time they arrived in Brixham, England on account of the way her husband Matt was driving.
But that isn’t what did the cake in.
It ended up being a very hot day and they got caught in a bit of traffic. When they arrived at their hotel the first thing they did was get the cake out of the car.
“Matt lifted it out and wanted to check it before the hotel store it for us,” Millie told Devon Live. “He lifted the lid off the cake box and could feel resistance. The middle layer had just collapsed from very liquid buttercream that was solid when he had left.”
Her poor husband apologized profusely, but Millie wasn’t all that upset.
“I was still calm and none of it felt like it mattered as I was marrying the man of my dreams,” she explained. “I was fairly disappointed as my family would’ve expected something spectacular as I’ve always been the baker/crafter of the family.”
Thankfully, Millie had a guardian baker or a fairy bake-mother, if you will, on her side that day.
Clare Vaz, the owner of Patty’s Piece of Cake, happened to be delivering cupcakes to the hotel when she heard about the Maltby’s wedding disaster and swooped in to save the day.
“Yesterday every cake makers worst nightmare sadly happened for one bride and groom,” Clare wrote on her Facebook page. “The bride will have spent hours and I mean hours creating her beautiful masterpiece for her special day today. Those ruffles alone will have taken at least 6 hours I would say…..there were hundreds of beautiful ombre ruffles. They traveled from Lincoln yesterday but devastatingly the cake did not. These things happen but when you’re a couple hundred miles away from home what do you do?”
Well, most people would probably panic, but luckily the soon-to-be newlyweds didn’t have to thanks to Clare.
“I happened to be in the right place at the right time yesterday at The Berry Head Hotel delivering my cupcakes. So we put our ice cream munching plans on hold and we quickly called Ace Taxis to whip me back home with my 2 little ladies to fix the cake,” Clare wrote.
Clare sprung into action and started to work her magic, just like fairy bake-mothers do.
“With time against me, I just didn’t have time to bake cool and decorate a new middle tier, so thankfully I had a dummy cake which I used to create the new middle tier,” Clare explained. “I managed to near enough color match the pink to the original cake too which was a bonus. The top tier (a delicious smelling Lemon cake) thankfully I could save. So, I stripped it back down, crumbcoated and re-covered in white.”

Clare basically ended up making the cake look like it had never collapsed in the first place.
“I cleaned up as best I could the gorgeous bottom tier and washed the ribbons. This morning Ace Taxis again helped me re-deliver the ‘new’ wedding cake to a most beautifully decorated room,” Clare wrote. “I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting the bride and groom, I don’t even know their name other than Mille and Matt from the lovely cake topper… so Mrs. Mille and Mr. Matt…..whilst cake plans sadly didn’t go in our favour I am pleased to have hopefully saved the day with a cake that is not as perfect as your original but will help make memories of your special day.”
Clare saved the day for a bunch of complete strangers out of the goodness of her own heart.
“With the sun shining, a stunning wedding location and fabulous food, I take this opportunity to wish you both the most splendid of wedding days and a fabulous married life full of love, laughter, and happiness,” she added.
Clare posted about the cake’s resurrection on social media where more than 1 million people saw it and applauded her efforts. However, she told Devon Live that she’s no hero. She says she just did what anyone would have done in her shoes if they were able to.
