You’ve probably already heard of Willie Nelson. After decades of making music, the singer, songwriter is one of the most recognized musicians to come out of country music. But besides being an artist and activist, Willie Nelson is also a father.
Unsurprisingly, one of his sons– Lukas– inherited his dad’s musical talents, so he started the band Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. He is the lead vocalist and lead guitarist for the group and is also a songwriter, like his dad.
In the video below, Lukas is having a jam session with some other musicians when someone suggests they cover “Always On My Mind.”
“Always On My Mind” was originally written in 1972 and recorded by Gwen McCrae and Brenda Lee. But over 300 versions of the song have been recorded and re-released by dozens of performers. Notable covers are one by Elvis Presley and– of course– Willie Nelson’s Grammy Award winning version in 1982.
There’s always some pressure when you’re covering a song that already been sung by some of the world’s greatest and most recognizable voices… and there is even more pressure when one of those voices belongs to your dad! Nevertheless, Lukas tackles the song and the result is truly beautiful.
